Press Release on Extension of Radiation Protection Interim Licenses issued by the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council of Sri Lanka
Under the instructions of Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Power and Energy, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Council of Sri Lanka (Council ) has decided to extend interim licence issued till 31st March 2020 for the use of high active radiation sources up to 31st May 2020 and to extend licences issued till 31st May 2020 to use of X-ray machines and radioactive material up to 30th June 2020 to provide relief to its license holders due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Regulatory Council has been able to continue providing radiation protection and regulatory services to its clients under the advice and guidance of the Hon. Minister despite the COVID-19 quarantine curfew. In addition, the staff of the regulatory body has been able to maintaining many essential services without any hassle such as granting approvals for imported radioactive material to treat cancer patients, approvals for X -ray room plans for installation of CT scans for IDH hospital, Angoda and Iranavila COVID-19 hospital . The Council also has issued regulatory approvals to release imported milk food to market based on laboratory certificates of milk food samples tested for radioactivity.
The Council has already made all arrangements to re-open the Council office for customers and public from Monday the May 11th 2020 on all working days from 10 am to 3.00 pm subject to the guidance issued by the government to control COVID-19 virus.
