At the invitation of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and radiological) unit of Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council conducted a workshop on nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response for officers of CBRN unit at Sri Lanka Air Force, Katunayake on 11th and 12th June 2018. Workshop included lectures, table top exercise and field exercise in radiological incident response.

The lectures were conducted by Mr. K.K.P.I.K. Kadadunna, Deputy Director/National emergency Coordinator and Mrs. K.G.K.U. Gamage, Scientific Officer who has vast experience on emergency response procedures and first responder duties. Mr. W.M.D.M. Piyarathna, Scientific officer assisted to conduct table top exercise and field exercise. He also conducted demonstration of use of the radiation survey instruments. Participants were very interactive and participated in discussion actively.

A table top exercise and a field exercise on “real time response to radiological emergency” using simulated radiological accident was conducted. All the participants were divided into several response groups and all performed their role and Council instructors provided the guidance to perform the exercise. It was a very successful session that all the participants obtained an experience of real time response to emergency. This is an example for assistance given by the Regulatory Council to train stakeholders in Sri Lanka as the lead technical organization responsible for management of nuclear or radiological emergencies.

At the end of the second session a discussion was held to discuss the outcome of the training.

At the request made by the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee of Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC) conducted an educational course for trainee engineering mechanic sailors of Navy. As per the above request, SLAERC conducted one day educational course on 24th April 2018 from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. The purpose of this course was to enhance their knowledge on Radiation and Nuclear Technology and observe the activities of SLAERC. Officers of the SLAERC made presentations on basic radiation physics, biological effects of radiation, legal framework basic requirements of SLAERC Act & regulations, emergency preparedness and response and application of nuclear technology. A demonstration of radiation measuring instruments and practical exercise were also conducted. 18th trainee engineering mechanic sailors were participated.

At the invitation of Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka AERC conducted a workshop on nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response for officers of Sri Lanka Air Force Fire School, Katunayake on 29th March 2018. Workshop included lectures and field exercise in nuclear and radiological incident response related to Fire response group.


The lectures were conducted by Mr. K.K.P.I.K. Kadadunna, Deputy Director/National emergency Coordinator and Mr. H.J. Premakumara, Scientific Officer who has most experience on emergency response instruments and first responder duties. Participants were very interactive and participated in discussion actively.


Evening session, a field exercise on “real time response to radiological emergency” was conducted. All the participants were divided into several response groups and all performed their role and Council instructors provided the guidance to perform the exercise. It was a very successful session that all the participants obtained an experience of real time response to emergency.

Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) is planning to conduct the above training course from 13th -16th June 2017 at the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council.

 

The purpose of this training course is to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge on the new regulatory and enforcement system described in the new Atomic Energy Act and to strengthen the awareness of radiation safety in personnel who use radioactive sources in industry and research fields.

 

The Council licence holders in Industrial and research field are invited to nominate up to two suitably qualified persons to attend the above training course. The application form and prospectus of this training course are attached herewith for necessary information.

 

A fee of Rs. 7,000.00 will be charged from each participant to cover the expenses of the training materials, lunch and refreshment.
