At the invitation of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and radiological) unit of Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council conducted a workshop on nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response for officers of CBRN unit at Sri Lanka Army, Vavuniya on 15th & 16th October 2018. Workshop included lectures, table top exercise and field exercise in radiological incident response.

The lectures were conducted by Mrs. K.G.K.U. Gamage and Mrs. C.S. Herath, Scientific Officers who have trained for emergency preparedness and response procedures at the Council. Mr. W.W.R.L. Medis, Scientific officer assisted to conduct table top exercise and field exercise. They also conducted demonstration of use of the radiation survey instruments. Participants were very interactive and participated in discussion actively.

A field exercise was based on “Radiation source search” and “Decontamination process” using simulated radiological accident. All participants were attended for the above two exercises while Council instructors provided the guidance to perform the exercises. It was a very successful session that all the participants obtained an experienced of real time scenario.

This is one of the collaborative programme under Emergency Preparedness to provide training to first responders as the lead technical organization responsible for management of nuclear or radiological emergencies.

At the end of the program a discussion was held to discuss the outcome of the training.
