A workshop on Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Emergency Response was organized by Sri Lanka Navy at the Naval & Maritime Academy in Trincomalee on 29th and 30th November 2017.

Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (Council) was invited by Sri Lanka Navy to conduct the lectures and field exercise in nuclear and radiological incident response to CBRN group.

As an initial step the Council has conducted the lectures on 21st November 2017 at welisara Navy base to allocate more time for a practical session at trincomalee.

Mr. H.L. Anil Ranjith, the Director General of the Council was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the workshop. He delivered a key note speech on “The role of Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council for controlling of uses of radioactive material and non-proliferation of nuclear material in Sri Lanka. This was useful and interesting speech for navy personnel to obtain the background of CBRN incidents.

The Council has conducted a field exercise on “Disperse of radioactive material scenario at the port” which helped to CBRN personnel of SL Navy to obtain knowledge and practical experience as first responders.

A Panel discussion has also been held to discuss their CBRN issues. Mr. Anil Ranjith is one of the panel member and he resolved the CBRN issues made by Sri Lanka navy participants and provided them a good understanding of possible effects from a nuclear power plant accident in neighboring country and required equipment to continue their CBRN work.

Mr. Prageeth Kadadunna, Mr. Kapila De Silva, Mr. Neel Fernando, Mr. Sumith Kolambage (Deputy Directors) and Mr. Jayantha Hirimuthugoda, Mr. Malinda Piyarathna (Scientific Officers) were attended as guest lecturers and instructors from the Council.
